Carrie Mae Hambrick Day
For 60 years, Carrie Mae Hambrick ran the Green Front Café on Second Street in Stockbridge — cooking, feeding neighbors, and holding a piece of this community together. The building sat in rough shape for years after she was gone. Floors buckled. Termites moved in. The roof was one storm away from collapse. Then Diane Miller walked through the door. She didn't buy it to make money. She bought it to protect a piece of Black history that was about to disappear. Her husband Tony Strachan led the renovation, uncovering beautiful wood beneath years of neglect and painting the little wood-frame house green again — just like it looked in the 1940s. Today Tony runs the kitchen, sending out plates of candied yams, greens, and fried fish. On Carrie Mae Hambrick Day, Diane and Tony open those doors wide. Their food joins the food trucks, vendors, and DJ at the block party on Second Street — feeding whoever shows up, no questions asked. All food is free. That was always the way Ms. Mae did it, and it still is.
